FUKU
means happiness and MASU means Japanese traditional wooden box using for
measure rice or beans, sometimes SAKE. In the festival of beginning of
Spring, SETSUBUN on 2nd Feb., Japanese people throw soya beans in order to
drive away the devils and also to call happiness, using FUKU MASU. This is
one of the most popular traditional ritual performance for Japanese people
even today. For this project, we call international and local artists to
make art works using MASU box in their way for Nagano central shopping
street. This area was before very center town with a lot of customers, but
now becoming
silent dead zone because of motorization and changing
customer's mind. We sent MASU BOX to the artists, then had received 60 mixed
media art works from 24 countries now. Each works has full of ideas and full
of artistic spirits. Almost foreign artists have experience of coming Nagano
before, because we invited them to NIPAF as performance artists. Through
this project we really appreciate their high quality artistic ability. We
are now very proud of showing their works to local people in
Nagano. Please visit to Nagano central street in this occasion and enjoy this
unique outdoor International Art Exhibition.
